The Results are in and the tickets are on sale for the 2006 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards

Sudbury – Once again, Music and Film in Motion (MFM) extends the invitation to enjoy a night on the red carpet with Northern talent.  On September 15th, MFM will raise the curtain to host the Fourth Annual Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards, at the Cambrian College Student Centre. Presented by The Amazing Persona and Channel 10 News.

“Music and Film in Motion (MFM) is proud to announce this year’s award category finalists for the 2006 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards Program (NOMFA),”.said Dennis Landry, Executive Director of MFM. “We invite everyone in the community to come and celebrate with us at the awards ceremony on September 15th, where we will recognize the efforts and showcase the talent of Northern Ontario artists.”

This year, MFM received submissions from communities across the North including Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, Chapleau, Parry Sound and Callander. Entries increased by 7% over last year’s numbers. MFM is pleased to see the music and film industries growing in Northern Ontario.

“We are very excited about this year’s results. It is great to see new names amongst the finalists and that they represent a broad cross section of music and film projects from every part of Northern Ontario. Submissions were up, which means the program is still growing, we are always happy to see that,” said Landry. “MFM would like to thank all of those who entered the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards Program. Without their talent and hard work the music and film industries would not see growth here in the North.”

For each category, the finalists were selected by a panel of prominent music and film industry professionals. The winners for each category will be announced at the Northern Ontario Music and Film Award’s Program ceremony to be held on Friday, September 15, 2006 at the Cambrian College Student Centre.

Tickets for the event are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the MFM office, Records on Wheels, Black Cat Too, Books and Beans, Gloria’s Restaurant, Jett Landry and Guitar Clinic.

Thinknorth Distribution Artist of the Week – CHRIS NEWMAN

After spending the last few years in St. Catherines, Chris Newman returned to his roots, moving back to his hometown of Sudbury, Ontario. Newman started playing guitar at 13, playing lead for bands in the Sudbury punk scene. Newman moved to more of the mainstream musical scene at the age of 19 as lead guitarist for the cover band “Soakin’ Wet” with well-known Sudbury singer-songwriter Angie Nussey.

With Nussey’s inspiration and help, he began to focus more on his songwriting and the improvement of his vocal skills. This initiative culminated in the release of his first album “Beauty and Suspect” in 2004. Newman’s music has been described as sweet, heartbreaking and romantic, it is however, his edgy and metaphorical lyrical style that makes this 26 year old from Northern Ontario a stand-out performer.

Newman writes what he knows; songs about love, life, lust and lessons learned, against the backdrop of the gritty and often contradicting perceptions of youth. As a live performer, Newman is spontaneous, emotional and always striving to make every show different. Further, he strives to make the songs he’s playing relevant to every moment.

While he finishes a B.A. in History, Newman can be found at Sudbury’s own The Townehouse Tavern once a month as well as playing regular shows at Coyotes. Newman is honored to have shared the stage with many talented local musicians and hopes to continue contributing to the Sudbury music community for many years to come. If you would like to check him out “Beauty and Suspect” is available at ThinkNorth Distribution.
